Flukes

The lands of Hallownest are filled by several groups of strange sentient creatures. They occupy various territories around the vast kingdom and developed their own societies and cultures aside from the Pale King's rule.

The Flukes are a species of worm-like creatures who took over the Royal Waterways.[1] They stay in the City's sewers for its calm and dampness and don't venture past it.[2] Most of the Flukes encountered are Infected. Like other Infected creatures, they display violent behaviour towards intruders on their territory.
Flukes are primitive, but not completely mindless.[3] With the exception of the uninfected 
Fluke Hermit, they do not seem to have any other purpose other than to reproduce and grow. They also understand the concept of family.[4] Their mother, Flukemarm, cannot move from her cave below the waterways and keeps breeding more and more Flukes.[5] The Infection also made her noticeably angrier, enough to scare away the Fluke Hermit.[6]
Flukes usually wander the waterways looking for anything to eat.[7] The Fluke Hermit, however, lives aside with some younger Flukes in the Junk Pit. She is also the only Fluke encountered by the Knight with whom they can communicate.

- According to Team Cherry's lead Playtester, Hari "Graig" Dimitriou, Ari has said that fluke meat is considered a delicacy to some members of Hallownest, and would be an "acquired taste".[8]
