The lands of [[Hallownest]] are filled by several groups of strange sentient creatures. They occupy various territories around the vast kingdom and developed their own societies and cultures aside from the [[Pale King|Pale King's]] rule.

The Mushroom Clan is made up of a species of sentient mushroom-like beings, neither bugs nor plants.<ref name=manualfungal>[https://www.fangamer.com/collections/hollow-knight/products/hollow-knight-switch-ps4-pc-collectors-edition-game Official manual:] <i>"The creatures within are not bug but mushroom. They aggressively protect their territory."</i></ref><ref>[[Ellina|Wanderer's Journal]], p. 51.</ref> They took residence in the [[Fungal Wastes]] bordering both the [[City of Tears]] and [[Deepnest]], where they hide among the scenery. These territorial creatures possess a hive mind and developed their own language.<ref name=manualfungal/><ref>[[Fungal Wastes]] [[Lore Tablets (Hollow Knight)#Fungal Wastes|Lore Tablet]]: <i>"Strength in the shared self. Strength in the mind united."</i></ref> The [[Lore Tablets (Hollow Knight)|Lore Tablets]] they leave can be translated by wearing the [[Spore Shroom]] [[Charms|Charm]].

The creatures can grow, from the young and inoffensive [[Shrumeling]]s to the more dangerous [[Shrumal Warrior]]s and [[Shrumal Ogre|Ogres]].<ref>[[Shrumeling]] [[Hunter's Journal]] entry: <i>"Young fungal creature."</i></ref><ref>[[Shrumal Warrior]] Hunter's Journal entry: <i>"Fungal creature that attacks intruders to protect its young."</i></ref><ref>[[Shrumal Ogre]] Hunter's Journal entry: <i>"Huge fungal creature."</i></ref> The body of a giant Fungal creature can also be found at the heart of the [[Fungal Core]]. While they accepted the rule of the Kingdom of Hallownest for the prescience of the Pale King, they opposed incursions of [[Deepnest|Deepnest's]] beasts on their territory.<ref>Fungal Wastes Lore Tablet: <i>"Warily shall we accept the will of the Wyrm. Its prescience shields us. Fate and Future we shall entwine."</i></ref><ref name=mushroomspeace>Fungal Wastes Lore Tablet: <i>"This border bounds the twisting, scratching things. Their dead sire, once of honoured caste. Their sealed mother, but the common beast. No peace with them we make."</i></ref> Like most of the Kingdom, they were affected by [[the Infection]] and attack any intruder to protect their young ones.

While they share a mushroom-like appearance and the same language, [[Mister Mushroom]] is not one of them. He has a mind of his own and his own agenda throughout Hallownest.<ref>[[Mister Mushroom]]: <i>"Now, with my duties here finished, it's time I made graceful departure."</i></ref> Though the Lore Tablet in [[Kingdom's Edge]] suggests some sort of worship by the Mushrooms with Mister Mushroom as the deity.<ref>[[Kingdom's Edge]] Lore Tablet: <i>"We speak the path of the Master Herald, he who would signal an Age's end."</i></ref>
