Bilewater

Bilewater is an area in Hollow Knight: Silksong. It is characterised by a dark green hue and its murky, swamp-like rooms.
Description

Bilewater is an area made up of swampy, noxious tunnels overgrown with roots and thorns. The area is riddled with traps set by the Stilkin. Its waters and caves were polluted by waste from the Citadel above.
The far eastern end of Bilewater, below the Pale Lake, is the only area where the water has not been tainted.
History
At one time, the waters of Bilewater were clean and unpolluted, before waste from the Citadel poisoned them.[1] The pollution from the Citadel affected the native inhabitants of Bilewater.[2][3]
The Stilkin tribe, of which Groal the Great is the chief and chaplain, are native to Bilewater.[4] The Stilkin hate the Citadel for allowing their waste to poison the caves of Bilewater.[5]
A Snail Shaman travelled to Bilewater hoping to ally himself with the Stilkin against the Citadel and was killed by Groal the Great, who stole his soul to strengthen themself.[6][7]
How to Access
Bilewater can be accessed from Sinner's Road by breaking a wall in the vertical passage in the east of the area.
It can also be accessed via the eastern section of Whispering Vaults. Clawline is required to open the passage leading to Bilewater.

Sub-area: Exhaust Organ
The Exhaust Organ is a massive structure in the caverns below the Underworks that connects the Underworks with Bilewater. It is accessed by passing through The Mist.
The Exhaust Organ exists to remove waste products from the Citadel and expel them into Bilewater.[8] A series of pipes and vents stretches throughout the Citadel and the Underworks, all of which eventually route into the organ. Bilewater and the Putrified Ducts' rancid and infested state is largely due to its excessive use. Here Hornet can fight Phantom and learn Cross Stitch by defeating them. This also unlocks a lift connection up into the Underworks, starting Act 2.
Playing the Needolin in a room before the boss fight in the Exhaust Organ reveals a memory with dialogue between Phantom and Lace. The exact speaker is unclear.

Trivia
- In an interview, Ari Gibson and William Pellen discussed the development of Bilewater, with Pellen stating "we just love a big swamp. We wanted some kind of poison status for ages", and Gibson calling the area "a final test [of] Act 2", stating that "If players manage to overcome the enormous challenge that Bilewater presents, they’re probably quite capable of overcoming the challenges that Act 3 will now bring." Pellen stated that its music was composed to add "at least one element that’s not exerting constant pressure on you", and described the area as having "a different sort of pressure than other areas", calling it "distinct from the Citadel".[9]
- In the room that opens during the Trail's End wish, the path is littered with pearls that can be found on Shakra's master's pearl necklace which is unique to this room.
