Bind

Bind is an ability in Hollow Knight: Silksong. It allows Hornet to heal herself and allies using Silk.

Function

Hornet can heal herself by Binding. This move can be performed in the air or on the ground. It takes 1.37 seconds to heal by default - 1.2 seconds to heal, and .17 seconds for a "flashing" animation to finish - although this can be changed by several Tools and Crests (see Modifiers below).

  • Healing requires 9 Strands of Silk and heals 3 Masks. When Hornet has enough Silk to Bind, the Spool glows brightly.

If Hornet gets hit before the healing time is finished, she loses all Silk on her Spool.

  • Getting hit during the final "flashing" animation does not proc this effect.
  • Hornet also uses Bind during cutscenes to obtain new Crests, as well as new Ancestral Arts and Silk Skills. This expends no Silk. Most such Bindings require the button to be pressed three times, although binding Rune Rage only requires two: one to begin the First Sinner boss fight, and one after she is defeated. Hornet can also Bind Grand Mother Silk after defeating her to obtain the Weaver Queen Ending, although this requires 12 Bindings.
  • During battles where Hornet fights enemies alongside Garmond & Zaza or Shakra, if Hornet binds nearby while they are stunned, they will recover immediately.

Modifiers

Various Crests and Tools change the way Bind works:

  • Reaper Crest's Bind temporarily makes Hornet's attacks release collectable Silk fragments that each replenish one third of a Silk strand.
  • Beast Crest and Witch Crest each have different and shorter Bind animations, as well as removing the direct healing in favour of lifesteal. The maximum amount that can be healed by each is the same as a standard Bind.
    • Beast Crest's Bind grants Fury for a few seconds, during which Needle hits are longer range, more damaging, and restore Masks on hit, with a maximum of 3 (or 4 with the Multibinder).
    • Witch Crest's Bind unleashes roots around Hornet that damage enemies and heal Hornet on hit, with a maximum of 3 (or 4 with the Multibinder).
      • Cursed Crest makes Hornet able to "Bind" with only 3 silk strands, but makes Bind useless. If she tries to Bind with it, she gets covered with roots and knocked down. This also happens when Hornet tries to bind a new Crest when cursed.
  • Architect Crest adds the Craft Bind, performed instead of a standard Bind while holding UP. Instead of healing, it replenishes Red ToolRed Tools the same as at a Bench.
  • Shaman Crest causes Hornet to slam to the ground before the Binding animation starts, delaying it and preventing healing in mid air.
  • Being plasmified replaces all of Hornet's Masks with regenerating Plasmium Masks, but causes Binding to heal 2 less Masks.
  • Warding Bell protects Hornet from damage while she is Binding, but still cancels Binding after being hit. But if she is hit with perfect timing, she can bind and negate damage.
  • Multibinder Performs 2 binds lasting 0.8 seconds each. Each bind heals 2 masks instead of 3.
  • Injector Band reduces binding time by 40%.
  • Reserve Bind allows Hornet to Bind once for free when she doesn't have enough Silk to do so. This tool is replenished while sitting on a bench. It does not cost Shell Shards.
  • Claw Mirror(s) creates a flash after Binding that damages enemies around Hornet.
  • Binding while infested with Muckmaggots removes the infestation instead of healing Masks.
    • Binding while infested with Muckmaggots and Multibinder equipped uses the first instance of healing to clear the Muckmaggots, and the second instance to heal 2 Masks.

Trivia

  • In old footage of Hollow Knight: Silksong, the Bind ability was nearly instant (~0.7 seconds).[2] The ability was later slowed; a change first seen in the Gamescom 2025 demo (~2.3 seconds).[3]
  • The Bind ability was formally revealed in a Team Cherry blog post, where it was given a deep-dive that explained the major differences between it and the Knight's Focus.[4]
