The gate... the gate! O, the Grand Gate to the Citadel stands before us! We are so close! O mighty ones beyond the gate, we beg you! Open the way and let we poor, insignificant little pilgrims crawl into the light...

The Grand Gate is a small area in The Citadel in Hollow Knight: Silksong. It serves as the main entrance into the Citadel and is guarded by the Last Judge.

Description

It is a large, elegant hall leading to an elaborate lift. By the time Hornet arrives, the lift is dilapidated and collapses down to the Underworks when Hornet tries to ride it.

The main hall of the Grand Gate consists of several scales that can be used as platforms to climb towards a passageway leading to the rest of The Citadel. These scales can be tipped either by standing on the elevated ends or striking them from below with an upward attack.

The lift shaft allows passage to a shrine dedicated to Nyleth. It is guarded by Shrine Guardian Seth.

History

The Grand Gate is the first area Hornet accesses in the The Citadel if she takes the main route; going through it marks the start of Act 2. Once she gets into the lift, it collapses down into the Underworks.

In Act 3, after obtaining Silk Soar, Hornet discovers a passage that leads to a shrine dedicated to Nyleth, guarded by Shrine Guardian Seth.

How to Access

The great door that bars access to the Grand Gate at the end of the Blasted Steps must first be opened by playing the Needolin after Hornet has rung five bells at large bench stations across Pharloom. This causes the Last Judge to appear and challenge Hornet. Defeating the Last Judge finally allows the door to open, granting access to the Grand Gate and the start of Act 2.

Alternatively, if Hornet entered the Citadel from the east side via Sinner's Road and the Exhaust Organ, it can be reached from the far southwest corner of Choral Chambers.

By her grace may all bugs pass safe to join us and our song.?

Trivia

  • In early footage of Silksong, it is shown that ringing the five bells was not needed to enter the Grand Gate.[1] This is due to them originally having a different purpose.
  • Despite its name, Grand Gate is the smallest distinct area in the game by room count, comprising just 4 rooms in total.
  • It was once possible to enter the Shellwood Shrine and fight Seth early via Beast Crest Needle Strike momentum storage. This has been patched, however.
