Beware your greed, thief. You'd be dead before your claw reached my cloak.

The Hunter's Cloak is an equipment item in Hollow Knight: Silksong. It is Hornet's default cloak and one of the first items available in her inventory.

Function

The Hunter's Cloak serves no gameplay function until it gets upgraded.

How to Acquire

The Hunter's Cloak is available in the inventory from the beginning of the game in Moss Grotto.

In-game Events

As Hornet meets more characters throughout Pharloom she gets recognised by the colour of her cloak, with some characters pointing it out directly by giving her nicknames, such as "Red maiden" by Sherma,[1] and "Bug-Red" by Twelfth Architect.[2]

Upgrades

When meeting the Seamstress, she mentions how the Hunter's Cloak alone would not suffice for Hornet to traverse the Far Fields and that it would need the help of her sewing skills. After completing the Flexile Spines wish, the Seamstress takes the cloak and upgrades it into the Drifter's Cloak, allowing Hornet to float in the air and catch updraft winds.[3]

Once Hornet reaches the tuning fork at the peak of Mount Fay and plays the Needolin, the Fayforn descends and grants Hornet her down to create the Faydown Cloak. The Mask Maker seems impressed with this gift and with the fact that the Fayforn has lent Hornet her aid.[4]

The Slab

After getting captured and taken to The Slab, Hornet wakes up and finds herself lacking all her items, including her Needle and cloak. Making her way through the prison, she eventually finds a Wardenfly using her equipment, so she proceeds to sneak up on them and retrieve her belongings.

Upon escaping The Slab, Hornet's cloak will reek with the smell from the prison flies, which will persist until she washes it away by going into bodies of water.[Note 1]

The cloak's inventory description also changes depending on its current state.

Odour Description
Full Smells strongly of fly.
Half Smells faintly of fly.

Trivia

  • In the 2019 Silksong demo, the Hunter's Cloak instead had the description: "Simple protective garb. Discreet pockets are woven within the lining."[5]

Notes

  1. Any body of water is sufficient to wash Hornet's cloak of the fly smell. The muckmaggot-infested waters in Bilewater and Putrified Ducts, as well as the sea of Void in the Abyss while Hornet has the Everbloom, are treated as water for the purposes of cleaning the cloak.
