We surely aren't seeing its finest moment, but this place has been serving us passing bugs for as long as any can remember. It's faith, you see! All those pilgrims, now and past. Our devotion holds it together. The camp'll remain, and provide, no matter the troubles.
Pilby

Bone Bottom is an area in Hollow Knight: Silksong containing the first town that can be encountered. It is part of the Mosslands alongside Moss Grotto.

Description

Bone Bottom is a small town that leads to The Marrow. It is inhabited by pilgrims, whose objective is to reach the Citadel. It is composed of tents and bone pieces.

Bone Bottom introduces the Wish system, with a Wishwall that gets continuously updated over the course of the game. The wishwall is maintained by Flick the Fixer, and gets reconstructed after defeating the Bell Beast. The town also has a small shop owned by Pebb, along with a Bellway Station. Inside the Station resides the Fearful Pilgrim, who leaves the area after Hornet visits the town using the Bell Beast. The town has a bench, which Pilby will sit beside and talk to Hornet about various areas as she unlocks them. After certain game events, Pilby will leave his usual spot and be replaced by Quiet Pilgrim.

History

Bone Bottom features an old settlement formed by pilgrims of Pharloom. It has been serving passing bugs for as long as any can remember.[1] Bone Bottom is located within the peaceful Mosslands region, one of the only areas in Pharloom to be mostly untouched by the Citadel.

Long ago a Chapel was built in Bone Bottom, possibly by the Snail Shamans.[2] This chapel was a religious center with a community dedicated to a faith completely different from Grand Mother Silk. After the construction of the Citadel, the members of this faith fled or went into hiding.[3] Eventually the chapel fell into ruins, leaving only the Chapel Maid left to maintain it. Bonegrave was a cemetery established in the west as a place to bury the dead inhabitants of Bone Bottom and pilgrims who couldn't make the climb.[4]

The Mosshome was another settlement to the northeast, and served as a place of rest and healing for passing pilgrims.[5] Eventually it too fell into ruin because of the Haunting. Mosshome is also the burial site of a Weaver, presumably Camora, Weaver of Healing, as her effigy is also found nearby.[6][5]

How to Access

Bone Bottom is initially accessible after defeating the Moss Mother and climbing up the Ruined Chapel. After that, it can be accessed by going to the west most side of Shellwood, using the Bellway stations, leaving Mosshome from the left or by dropping down from Blasted Steps.

Chapel Maid: Aye! Gone! The lot'o them, fled and hidden. But I'm not leaving till I've set this place right...
...It's that Citadel above, you see. Even now, in Pharloom's long decline, the simple bugs, they're witless before it. Too grand. Too majestic. Too powerful.

  4. Hornet: There is a vast grave beyond. I'd assume most bugs died climbing the path, but it seems many fell before their trek had barely commenced?
Chapel Maid: Aye! Lost their lives to beasts, or to luck turned rotten. Others were simply formed too frail. At least those poor souls can rest together.
