The Needolin is an Ability that Hornet acquires in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Using her Needle and Silk, Hornet plays a melody that can extract unique dialogue from most NPCs and enemies in the game. It can also reveal messages, activate mechanisms, and summon the help of certain creatures.

Function

Hold down NEEDOLIN to begin playing at any point. This can perform several functions:

• Causes nearby NPCs to start singing, prompting unique dialogue if the NPC has any.
• Stuns enemies in place for several seconds as they sing, revealing unique dialogue.
  • Does not affect Black-Threaded enemies and certain bosses that aren't haunted.
• Reveals silk strings above enemies, angled towards Grand Mother Silk.
  • These strings do not appear on NPCs that are not haunted.
• Reveals unique dialogue for certain Bosses.
  • This dialogue is easier to prompt if the Needolin is played while the boss is staggered.
• Reveals ghostly apparitions near specific areas or corpses (referred to as Memories), along with unique dialogue.
• Triggers Silk Flies in The Mist to fly to the correct path.
• Activates certain Lore Tablets to reveal messages left by the Weavers.
• Unlocks doors to Weavenests throughout Pharloom.
• Transports Hornet to the Bellway which the Bell Beast is currently at, using the Beastling Call.
• Summons the Bell Beast at Bellway stations rather than calling for it.
• Causes any Void corrupted Silk in the background of various areas during Act 3 to lash out with tendrils.

Playing the Needolin is also required at specific points for the following quests:

• Opening a weaver door in the memory after binding the Needolin.
• Opening the great door in Last Judge's arena for the OPEN: Grand Gate quest after activating 5 Bell Shrines.
• Playing a eulogy for Shakra's master at the end of the Trail's End Wish.
• Learning and playing the Threefold Melody for the ASCEND: Pharloom's Crown quest.
• Summoning the Fayforn at the peak of Mount Fay in order to acquire the Faydown Cloak.
• Activating the Soul Snare set by the Caretaker after defeating Grand Mother Silk for the DESTROY: Soul Snare quest.
• Learning the Beastling Call and the Elegy of the Deep.
• Entering certain memories using the Elegy of the Deep for the SEEK: The Old Hearts Objective.
• Finding uncollected orbs and activating the shrine in Lost Verdania.
• Drawing Mister Mushroom from the ground for the Passing of the Age Wish.

Needolin can be amplified by equipping the Spider Strings, which increases its range and the time it effects enemies.

The Needolin is acquired after defeating Widow in Bellhart and binding her power.

• "Needolin" is a portmanteau of needle and mandolin or violin.
• The main melody played by Hornet on the Needolin is a variation of the Dies irae melody, used extensively throughout the game's soundtrack.
• The Needolin can be played while resting on a bench, but the Beastling Call and Elegy of the Deep can not.
  • After or while playing, Sylphsong stops regenerating Silk.
• In certain locations, Hornet can play unique melodies:
  • She plays the eulogy taught by Shakra in the Trail's End wish whenever the Needolin is played in her master's room.
  • She plays the Conductor's Melody whenever the Needolin is played beside Conductor Ballador.
  • She plays the Vaultkeeper's Melody in either Cardinius' room or the Bellhome while the gramophone is playing the Sacred Cylinder.
  • She plays the Architect's Melody whenever she is on the platform that activated the automated choir at the top of the Cogwork Core. (This, however, is inaccessible during Act 3)
