Steel Seer Zi is an NPC who appears in Hollow Knight: Silksong, exclusively in Steel Soul Mode. A steel child of the Steel Society, she is located at the far east edge of Blasted Steps and gives the wish A Vassal Lost.

Background

Zi resides in a small hidden area in the Blasted Steps and has unseen masters to whom she is obedient. She shares her masters with Sula, Steel Soul Jinn and Confessor Jiji. Her vassal, Sula, betrayed their superior and masters and fled, and Zi requires them found, either dead or alive to avoid her masters' wrath.

In-game Events

Zi can be found dormant, and can be awoken by being struck with the needle, Zi asks Hornet to find her lost vassal by offering the Wish A Vassal Lost. Upon completing the wish, she gifts Hornet the Growstone.

From your presence, it is clear this land too has caught the long gaze of your Masters. Masters... Yes... For them, Zi observes... obedient... always... And you... a creature in half... Pale It... Bug It... old... stubborn... alone... You too are observed. Getting offered the Wish If Hornet does not have a Map: ...Creature, higher... Its meeting, Zi's awakening... It is not chance... It has been sent, by Masters served?... To retrieve her vassal lost? But no... pale It cannot.. First, a chart is needed. Pale It must acquire one. Only then can Zi provide the marks... Their vassal's location sensed strong. If Hornet has a Map: ...Creature, higher... Its meeting. Zi's awakening... It is not chance... It has been sent to Zi, yes? By Masters served?... Save us both from the Masters' wrath. After defeating Summoned Saviour and talking to Sula Zi, your vassal is gone, alive, fled beyond these lands. I chose to allow their escape, even if your wish may not be granted. The wish? No... pale It... Zi sensed clear your meeting... The rite... The vassal is tarnished. They have touched the dark. By the Masters, they will now be hunted... no matter the distance fled. Perhaps, for your vassal, that is preferable? Waste here in servitude or flee free. They made their choice, and proclaimed it clear by their black action. Their dark champion is slain, but luck or guile may yet see them survive. Hope!.. Pale It... For a vassal who defies the Masters?... You give Zi a thought, complex... The outcome is different... and Zi must now observe alone... but this may be the better way? Zi shall accept the happening... shall pray the Masters still see her loyal... and Zi too will share the hope... that her vassal lives long unbound. Location

Steel Seer Zi is located at the far east edge of Blasted Steps. A breakable wall hides a cave normally inhabited by a Silkeater, but in Steel Soul Mode, it instead contains a tunnel leading to Zi's crystal-lit chamber.

Trivia

• Zi appears on the icon of the Steel Soul and Steel Heart achievements.
• While not accessible ingame, Zi's cavern is present in Classic Mode, but it resembles the rest of Blasted Steps more than in Steel Soul Mode.

• Zi is surrounded by a large rune which continously pulsates inwards towards her. The rune's sprite is named sentinel_rune in the game files.
  • Its design somewhat resembles the Farsight rune, suggesting that Zi may be using a similar power to track down her vassal and sense events occurring in the world.
  • Internally Steel Seer Zi's rune is called both "sonar" and "worldsense", supporting its similarity to Farsight.
