Tacks

Tacks are a Red ToolRed Tool in Hollow Knight: Silksong. When used, Hornet throws 4 tacks on the ground that damage enemies who touch them.

Usefulness

Tacks last for a long time and can deal damage twice before disappearing. They also cannot be destroyed by most enemy attacks. This makes them very useful against swarms of enemies and bosses that are usually grounded.

Tacks are less effective against flying enemies. They become useless if there is no solid ground to place them on.

Up to 4 sets of Tacks may be placed at the same time. Deploying a fifth will cause the oldest set of Tacks to disappear.

Synergies

Tacks pair somewhat well with Pollip Pouch as they can repeatedly apply poison over an extended time. However, since only one instance of poison can ever be applied, an enemy which runs over multiple tacks will receive minimal extra damage.

How to Acquire

Tacks are given by Crull and Benjin in Sinner's Road for completing the Roach Guts Wish.

During Act 3, it is instead found near their bodies.

Trivia

  • Tacks will shake and slightly move when screenshake occurs. Tacks are also slightly moved when Hornet walks over them or attacks them.
  • The small, non-hostile ants found in Hunter's March, upper Far Fields, and the cellar of Halfway Home will carry Tacks along and eventually into the ground (like they do with other scattered items like Rosaries).
  • In the Hollow Knight: Silksong Edge Magazine issue,[1] Xbox trailer,[2] and April 2nd Nintendo Direct footage,[3] Tacks were black instead of brown.
    • Also in the Xbox trailer, Hornet threw only four tacks per use instead of the five at release, though later they were nerfed to four again.[2]
