...Not worthy... ...Alone, without you...
...Climb and serve... ...Die and serve...

The Wanderer Crest is a Crest in Hollow Knight: Silksong. While equipped, Hornet's attack speed increases greatly, but her slashes become narrower. When at least a Bind's worth of Silk is held, Hornet gains a 2% chance to deal a critical hit.

Attacks

Compared to Hunter Crest, Wanderer Crest has +34% attack speed. Width is traded for speed and combo damage output.

  • Neutral Slashes: Hornet swings the Needle in a narrow arc. Despite the Crest's description and appearance of the strikes, it has slightly more horizontal range than the Hunter Crest.[Source 1]
  • Down-slash: Hornet performs a quick, wide slash directly beneath herself, lacking sideways movement on a miss or delay before bouncing on a hit.
  • Run-slash: Hornet performs a quick, short-range slash, which does not stop movement on a miss. On hit, Hornet will dart up and back. Another attack input shortly after a hit results in a followup attack where Hornet dashes back in.
  • Needle Strike: Hornet springs forward a short distance and performs a series of rapid thrusts, hitting up to 5 times for roughly 3x a normal strike's damage in total.

Mechanics

When Hornet has at least 9 strands of Silk (the same amount needed to Bind), and is not infested by Muckmaggots, Needle attacks have a 2% chance to deal critical hits for 3x damage, indicated with a flash and sound effect.[Source 2] This state is indicated by the HUD Crest expanding into a harp. Critical Hits average out to a 4% increase in Needle damage while the Silk requirement is met.

  • The chance for critical hits is increased to 2.2% when Magnetite Dice is equipped, raising the average damage increase to 4.4%.
  • Despite making a Bind available for use, Reserve Bind does not grant access to critical hits while below 9 strands of Silk.

Wanderer can be identified by the golden yellow colour of Hornet's slash attacks.

Usefulness

  • The Wanderer Crest's attack speed is about 34% higher than Hunter Crest's[1], giving it a very high damage potential.
    • Hornet can gain Silk very quickly, enabling more frequent Binds and Silk Skills.
    • Certain enemy attacks can be parried by hitting them with the Needle. This can be done with any Crest, but Wanderer Crest's high attack speed makes them much easier to perform. This can even completely negate rapid flurries of attacks with precise timing or luck.
      • The rapid hits of the Needle Strike are especially easy to parry with.
  • Critical hits are too rare to be relied upon, but do have a noticeable impact when they happen and can sometimes instantly kill enemies.
  • The down-slash is excellent for bouncing off enemies and objects.
    • Unlike the Reaper Crest, there is no delay or movement other than the bounce itself.
    • The smaller hitbox can make the Down-slash require more skill to use compared to Reaper's.
  • The abundant Yellow ToolYellow Tool slots make this Crest ideal for exploration.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Wanderer Crest's narrow attacks cover approximately 40% less area than Hunter Crest's[1].
      • This can make it harder to hit flying enemies.
      • This gives the Crest a slightly higher skill floor than the other early game Crests.
    • Wanderer Crest only has 1 Red ToolRed Tool slot, limiting how much they can be used.
      • This makes Pollip Pouch and Quick Sling less effective.
      • It is advised to use this slot for utility or specific situations rather than relying on it for damage.

Synergies

  • Magnetite Dice multiplies the chance of a critical hit by 1.1, increasing it to 2.2%.
  • Longclaw greatly helps to alleviate the Crest's short range.
  • Flintslate increases the damage of melee attacks by 50% for 8 seconds. The Crest's attack speed allows for more hits within the tool's duration, giving more value per use.
  • Flea Brew increases the speed of melee attacks by 50% for 10 seconds. Combined with the Crest's already high attack speed, this allows for Hornet to quickly gather great amounts of Silk.
  • If one is confident in their ability to avoid damage, the Barbed Bracelet's needle damage boost pairs well with the increased attack speed.
  • Wispfire Lantern passively augments DPS while being easily sustained by the increased Silk generation of the Crest's faster attacks.
  • Snitch Pick's bonus damage can be helpful as the Crest's low range encourages making use of Clawline's gap-closing ability
  • Pin Badge reduces the charge-up time of Needle Strikes considerably, which helps take advantage of the Crest's uniquely powerful Needle Strike, especially in conjunction with Flintslate.
  • Weavelight and Spool Extender both allow for simplified silk management, which makes critical hits easier to achieve.

How to Acquire

The Wanderer Crest is found inside the Chapel of the Wanderer in Bonegrave.

Trivia

  • The crest is likely a reference to the Knight, which was called "Wanderer" in interviews and official promo material,[2][3] and who has a very similar moveset in Hollow Knight.
