Needle

The blade was a gift, given by a noble tribe of my homeland. They forged the strongest steel, though it was rarely seen beyond their hive.

– Hornet

The Needle is the bladed weapon wielded by Hornet. It is used to perform basic attacks, as well as certain Silk Skills and Abilities.

Upgrades

The Needle can be upgraded by Pinmaster Plinney up to four times. Each upgrade adds four additional damage.

Crests

Each Crest provides a unique set of Needle attacks. The basic attacks differ in speed and range, while Needle Strikes differ in range, damage and the number of hits per attack.

Additionally, some crests provide situational damage bonuses:

• Evolved Hunter Crest, by 30% after landing 6 hits. Hunter Crest's second evolution increases the damage bonus to 50% after another 6 hits. The damage bonuses persist until Hornet takes damage.
• Beast Crest, by 25% in fury mode after Binding. Fury mode by default lasts 4.7 seconds, and can be increased by dealing damage or decreased by taking damage.
• Wanderer Crest, by 3x damage via a 2% chance (2.2% with the Magnetite Dice) of random critical hits while Bind is ready.

Needle-bouncing

While in the air, downward slashes can be performed on enemies, spikes and certain objects in order to bounce. This move is known as "Needle-bouncing", "pogo-jumping", or simply "pogo-ing". Successfully bouncing refreshes Hornet's mid-air abilities.

Like with other attacks, each crest provides a unique downward slash, requiring different positioning relative to the bounce target.

• Hunter Crest: Hornet does a long dash strike diagonally downwards.
• Reaper Crest: Hornet cuts down in a wide half-circle, moving diagonally downwards a short distance in the facing direction.
• Wanderer Crest: Hornet performs a quick, wide slash directly beneath herself, lacking sideways movement on a miss or delay before bouncing on a hit. This is similar to the Knight's slashes from the first game.
• Beast Crest: Hornet pounces forward and spins like a sawblade after a slight delay, with a movement arc similar to a dash that curves downwards and can be adjusted slightly. On a successful hit, Hornet bounces up unless she is too far below the target.
• Witch Crest: Hornet whips her Needle downwards with a small angular offset. On hit, she briefly becomes intangible. This attack strikes twice on hit; however, this does not generate more Silk. The damage is split between the two hits, the first dealing slightly more, totalling 1 more damage than normal.
• Architect Crest: Hornet dives diagonally downwards, drilling in the same direction. Holding the attack button makes Hornet pause to charge, extending the spin time, dive distance, and the number of hits it deals. With a full charge, it deals double damage and strikes twice as many times. The damage is spread roughly evenly across hits.
• Shaman Crest: Hornet fires an energy wave downward. This causes Hornet to move up slightly even if it does not hit a target, although hitting a target moves her further.

Tools

Some Tools affect various aspects of the Needle:

• Weighted Belt lessens knockback when striking an enemy.
• Longclaw increases the Needle's range by 27%.
• Flea Brew temporarily increases the Needle's attack speed.
• Flintslate temporarily increases the Needle's damage and inflicts burn upon 3 consecutive hits.
  • When combined with Pollip Pouch, the Needle inflicts poison on every hit, but the damage bonus is reduced and burn is no longer applied.
• Barbed Bracelet increases the Needle's damage at the cost of doubling the damage received.

Trivia

• Hornet's Needle was a gift given to her by members of The Hive.
• In the 2019 Silksong demo, the base Needle, which looked like the Sharpened Needle, had the description of "Long, bladed weapon, uniquely balanced for combat."
