As Hornet ascends from the foundations of Pharloom towards the citadel at its crest, she may pass through the wasted caverns of Greymoor. The misted fields and dilapidated towers are now infested with Crawbugs, devious nesting types, and the former tenders of the land have become haunted.

Greymoor is an area in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Its expansive caverns are comprised of damp and dreary fields beset by a constant rainfall, making bodies of water abundant in the area.

Description

Greymoor is a large area with a gloomy, dark atmosphere. Constant rainfall leaves the entire region sodden and damp. Craws and Mites can be found all throughout the area.

The tenders of the area: Thread Rakers, Dreg Catchers, and Silk Snippers, continue to perform their jobs under the influence of the Haunting. Dilapidated towers used by the tenders of the moors can be found in its western reaches. The towers themselves resemble massive windmills, though only two can be entered; many more can be seen spinning slowly in the background.

Hornet can choose to either defeat the Moorwing to enter Bellhart or travel with the Flea Caravan to Greymoor if at least five fleas have been found, allowing access to Bellhart without defeating Moorwing first. If skipped via the Caravan, Moorwing can be found in a separate location outside of the Bellway station.

Hornet can bind the Silk Skill Thread Storm after defeating an arena of Craws, Tallcraws, and Squatcraws. A lever can be struck to deploy a series of balloons that provide access to the Skill. The Threefold Pin can also be found in a hidden room along the area's eastern wall.

In Act 3, Hornet is able to access Verdania through a breakable wall in the east. This is only if she's freed the Green Prince in Sinner's Road and later talked to him in the room of the Cogwork Dancers.

The lower part of Greymoor that has supposedly been serving as storage as evidenced by the numerous silk spools and bags, is infested with Mites, Fluttermites and Mitemothers. The area is filled with traps. The traps instantly kill Mites and Fluttermites, and combo Hornet for + if she gets caught in them. The Fractured Mask breaks on the first hit, not saving Hornet from death. The traps can be defused by striking them with the Needle or Red ToolRed Tools.[Missing information]

History

In the past, Greymoor was less dangerous before the Haunting, and pilgrims passed through the land more frequently.[1] It is also stated that it was used as farmland before The Citadel ordered the keepers to catch silk.[2]

After the Citadel's construction, many bugs were tasked to work as tenders of the moors, catching and processing the silk dregs that fell from the Citadel above.[3] Dreg Catchers catch silk dregs with a spiked staff,[4] Thread Rakers roll the silk up with long rakes in preparation for respooling,[5] and Silk Snippers would cut the silk into spools inside the towers to return it to the Citadel above.[6]

Eventually, these bugs would fall to the Haunting by Grand Mother Silk, performing their jobs endlessly in service to a Citadel they will never see.[4][5]

The Moorwing is a winged mite-beast that was bred to be large by the bugs of The Citadel, who used it to catch workers who tried to flee their tasks. After the death of its wranglers, the Moorwing stalked the towers of Greymoor, feasting on passing pilgrims and tenders alike.[7]

The bugs of Sinner's Road bred Muckroaches for the purpose of feeding the workers of Greymoor.[8]

How to Access

Greymoor can first be reached via the long vertical tunnel in Far Fields after acquiring the Drifter's Cloak.

Alternatively, Hornet can travel to Greymoor with the Flea Caravan after finding five Fleas.

If Hornet uses a Simple Key to open the Wormways, she can use Swift Step to scale it, reach Shellwood, then enter through Bellhart.

Sub-area: Halfway Home

Halfway Home is a tavern located in the central area of Greymoor. It is initially accessible only via the western door. The eastern door must be unlocked by standing on a pressure plate inside the building, after which it will remain unlocked.

A bench can be found inside, as well as the NPCs Creige (the bartender), and Nuu, who gives the Hunter's Journal. Creige sells a drink of Nectar for  10, which fully heals Hornet and restores 6 Silk.

After fulfilling the Crawbug Clearing Wish for Creige, a giant scarecraw will appear on top of the Halfway Home, and the Craws that used to be around will be gone.

As part of the Great Taste of Pharloom Wish, Hornet can pay Creige  480 for the Vintage Nectar from the Halfway Home's cellar, which is infested with Skarr.

Sub-area: Craw Lake

A large lake on the east side of the area. It is frequented by Craws, Tallcraws, and Squatcraws.

Shakra will temporarily camp at the entrance to Craw Lake, providing Hornet a place to rest. Shakra will leave if Hornet progresses too much further[Missing information], removing the most convenient Bench for the area.

A dilapidated building within the lake contains two Mites and an arena.

Upon completing the arena, a lever will be revealed that deploys a series of balloons around the lake, allowing Hornet to access the areas above and around it.

In the room above the lake, the skill Thread Storm can be found, and to the to right of the lake a Flea can be found, guarded by a Tallcraw.

Court of Craws

During Act 3, the Craw Summons has a chance of being delivered when sitting in certain benches in the areas near Greymoor. Taking the Summons to the locked door in the Craw Lake house will unlock the door, and going inside, Hornet will be confronted by the Court of Craws, consisting of a jury of Craws and their lord and justice, the Crawfather.[9]

After an arena fight, Hornet is rewarded with the Craw Memento and Crawbell.

Trivia

  • In 2019, Team Cherry described Greymoor as "a huge area, one of the biggest we’ve ever created."[10] It was originally larger, with what is now Sinner's Road being part of Greymoor, then-called "Dustroach Pens".[11]
  • Greymoor's theme is internally known as "Greymoor v4", implying that there were three revisions of the song previously composed.[12]
