– Herrah the Beast

Herrah the Beast is a recurring NPC in Hollow Knight and Hollow Knight: Silksong. She is one of the Dreamers and is involved in the Knight's quest to destroy the Infection.

Background

Herrah is a Weaver who was the queen of the Spider Tribe of Deepnest.[4][3] She is the mother of Hornet.[2] After arriving from her homeland of Pharloom with the other Weavers, she became the partner of Deepnest's sire, who was of honoured caste.[4][5] At a certain point, her partner died, leaving Herrah as the sole ruler.[5] Like the rest of the Weavers, it was an almost impossible task for Herrah to conceive children.[6]

The Spider Tribe and Herrah herself never accepted the Pale King and his rule.[7] When the Infection first appeared, the Pale King asked Herrah to become a Dreamer to seal the entrance to the Black Egg in the Temple of the Black Egg. She only agreed if the Pale King would have a child with her, which ended up being Hornet.[8][9] After Hornet was born, Herrah and Hornet were permitted little time together as Herrah went into an eternal sleep.[9] Before going to sleep, Herrah encouraged Hornet to follow her own desires.[10]

In-game events

Hollow Knight

Herrah appears as a projection together with the other Dreamers in both Greenpath and the Resting Grounds. While Lurien the Watcher wants their Seals to remain and Monomon the Teacher wants their Seals to break, Herrah does not voice her opinion on this.[11][12] She and the other Dreamers attempt to lock the Knight in the Dream Realm after the Resting Grounds encounter.

Once the Knight reaches her physical body in Beast's Den, her mind can be entered by using the Dream Nail. She can then be attacked in her Dream after which Focus can be used to break her Seal. Her physical body has disappeared when the Knight wakes up. Hornet appears at Herrah's former resting place if she was fought in Kingdom's Edge before Herrah's death.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

Herrah appears as a past version of herself in Hornet's memories in the Red Memory. In the memory, Herrah is depicted with a red cloak over her body and a blurry mask. She tells Hornet to ignore the desires of the other Weavers who would want her to be a guardian or a queen, or both. Instead, she encourages Hornet to resist them and to see another hope beyond.[10] Herrah's final wish is for Hornet to remember her as her mother, beyond the mask and role she would come to be known for, as she would be laid forever to rest as a Dreamer.[13]
