The Resting Grounds... Passengers would come here to conduct rituals for those who had passed on...Not any more though. Perhaps the dead conduct their own rituals now?

The Resting Grounds are a network of caverns filled with graves located above the City of Tears.[1]

Description

Tombstones and monuments cover the caverns of the Resting Grounds. Before the Dream Nail has been acquired, the area is grey and relatively colourless. After obtaining the Dream Nail, the Resting Grounds becomes an area with a blue colour-tone and ghostly spirits floating throughout the foreground and backdrop.

Graves

The west part of the Resting Grounds contains the Blue Lake, a body of water where Tiso and Quirrel can be encountered at certain points. Above this area is a Tram which leads to the Forgotten Crossroads. Near the Tram is a grave where the Warrior Dream Xero can be fought. Further east are the Dreamer Shrine statues, which can be interacted with to obtain the Dream Nail after escaping from a forgotten dream.

The waters of the Blue Lake

The Seer is present in the northeast part of the area. She gives rewards depending on how much Essence has been collected. Below her is a room which contains the Grimm Troupe content Dreamshield Charm. Opposite this room is a Stag Station. Above this is the entrance to Spirits' Glade which can be opened after collecting 200 Essence.

Below the Stag Station is a grave where Desolate Dive/Descending Dark can be used. This leads to the Crypts, an area containing the Soul Eater Charm. The Grey Mourner can be found near this area after breaking a cracked ceiling above a chest. The south part of the Resting Grounds has a lift leading to the east side of the City of Tears.

Lore

The Seer

The Resting Grounds were a sacred place where bugs would come to conduct rituals for the dead.[2][3] The Moth Tribe were the caretakers of the graves, eventually closing the door to Spirits' Glade and forbidding its opening.[4][5]

A shrine to the Dreamers was built after they went into an eternal sleep.[6] When the Infection returned, bugs stopped going to the Resting Grounds.[2] The Seer ended up being the last survivor of her tribe.[7] She maintains the graves and guides the wielder of the Dream Nail.[8]

How to access

The chasm in Crystal Peak

The Resting Grounds can be first accessed in four different ways. With the Tram Pass, the Tram in the Forgotten Crossroads can be taken which leads to the west part of the Resting Grounds. A hidden area above Salubra's hut can also be used to go to the Blue Lake. Another way to enter the area is to use the lift in the east part of the City of Tears. Lastly, the chasm near the Crystallised Mound in Crystal Peak can be used to fall into the Resting Grounds.

Sub-area: Spirits' Glade

A glade where the souls of dead bugs came to rest. Most of the Kickstarter backer spirits can be found in this area.

Upon entering the Glade, Revek warns the Knight that they will face consequences if they harm any of the Glade's "inhabitants". Once Dream Nailing at least one spirit, Revek spawns and charges at the Knight, dealing 2 Masks of damage. He cannot be damaged or defeated, but can be repelled by parrying, Dream Nailing, dashing through him using Sharp Shadow, or hitting him with the trail of the Crystal Heart Super Dash. Doing so despawns him only temporarily; he keeps appearing and attacking as long as there are spirits in the Glade. Once all spirits have been consumed, he himself can be Dream Nailed.

Sub-area: Shrine Of Believers

A hidden area found by travelling behind the waterfall and into the room with the moth statues. Once here, jump to the top left of the room where there is a small hidden ledge to Dream Nail the largest moth's head to access the shrine. The Monarch Wings are required to jump up this ledge, but it can also be accessed by climbing up the right wall and using the Crystal Heart. The Shrine of Believers contains a building full of breakable tablets displaying backer messages, guarded outside by the Unnamed Moth.

The inscriptions on the tablets of the Shrine can also be found here.

Sub-area: Blue Lake

A calm, large lake which reflects the blue minerals around it, giving the lake its incandescent blue colour.[9] Its water seeps through the ground to create the rain in the City of Tears, and ultimately fills the pipes and drains in the Royal Waterways. Quirrel can be found in this area after Monomon has been killed, and Tiso can be encountered here after meeting him in the Forgotten Crossroads. This is also the last time the Knight encounters Quirrel, who disappears after a final moment is spent with him, granting the Witness achievement

Special Rooms

Dreamer Shrine

The Dreamer Shrine sits in the middle of a large cave, near the shaft at the end of the Resting Grounds. It consists of three statues on an elevated platform, each representing one of the Dreamers by their respective mask, and a written prayer revealing their locations in Hallownest. Once the Knight steps on the platform, they become trapped by seals until inspecting the tablet. After which, the Dreamers appear out of Essence and cast the Knight's consciousness into a forgotten dream.

Crypts

The Crypts extend from below the Resting Grounds' shaft and further beyond. They consist of narrow tunnels and several small burial chambers, filled with entombed bugs and their possessions. Most of the rooms are separated by breakable walls and floors. A hidden burial chamber to the Snail Shamans can be found on the far right.

These tunnels can only be accessed by smashing through a damaged tomb at the bottom of the Resting Grounds' shaft. Another access was sealed from the inside and leads to the lift to the City of Tears, and further away to the Blue Lake. A collapsed ceiling in one of the chambers leads to the Grey Mansion.

Grey Mansion

The Grey Mansion is the retreat of the Grey Mourner inside a cave aside the Resting Grounds. The original access corridor from the large shaft has collapsed, and the place can only be reached through the Crypts. Outside the mansion, the Knight can rest on a Bench. Inside, the Grey Mourner can entrust them with the Delicate Flower, as part of her quest.

Trivia

  • An early name for Spirits' Glade was the "Glade of Hope".[10] The Map sent to Kickstarter backers, which was also included in the physical edition of the game, still uses this name.
