Shrine Guardian Seth

He offered fair warning and challenge, a duel in the purest sense. I admire his honour, and his skill.

Shrine Guardian Seth is a main boss and wandering NPC in Hollow Knight: Silksong. He defends the shrine of Nyleth, battling anyone who wishes to pass through. After his defeat, he begins travelling around Pharloom, seemingly having lost his memory.
Background
Shrine Guardian Seth serves as the eternal guardian to the Shellwood Shrine in Grand Gate containing the monument to Nyleth, which he defends by entering into combat with anyone who attempts to pass him.[3] He has slain many bugs in his defence of the shrine, a fact which he laments.[4]
In-game Events
Shrine Guardian Seth is first encountered guarding the Shellwood Shrine in Grand Gate. He falls into the waters of Shellwood once he is defeated and the path to Nyleth's shrine opens.
After Nyleth is defeated and Hornet has obtained either one of the other Old Hearts[Source 1] or the Everbloom, Seth appears in Greymoor, revealing he survived his battle with Hornet. He has seemingly lost his memory and does not recognise Hornet. He reveals his name as just Seth, and his name-card no longer includes the "Shrine Guardian" title. He says he is now travelling Pharloom. He can be next found in Shellwood, east of the Bellway, and then back in the Grand Gate, just outside the entrance to the Citadel. After meeting Seth in Shellwood, he skips appearing in Grand Gate and moves to Fleatopia if Hornet has completed the Ecstasy of the End wish and obtained the Everbloom.
If the Ecstasy of the End wish has been completed, Seth can then be found at the Fleatopia. Seth holds the highest score out of the NPCs in all 3 of the Flea games, and beating his high score in all the games grants the Guardian's Memento.
Behaviour and Tactics
Seth sits passively in his arena and does not start the fight unless Hornet engages him after talking to him, uses Challenge, or tries to walk past him.
Phase 1
Seth wields a gilded Pin and a cymbal he uses as both shield and projectile. He has the following attacks in this phase:
- Pin Combo: Seth hops backwards slightly into the air before slashing 3 times with his pin, moving forwards slightly with each slash. If Hornet is hit, Seth slashes again, dealing
+
. The attack may be cancelled into Backstep after the second slash if Hornet is behind Seth. - Pin Whirlwind: Seth slashes forward before jumping backwards while spinning his pin around himself. If Hornet is behind him after the initial slash, then Seth continues the whirlwind forwards instead. If Hornet is caught in the whirlwind, it deals
+
.
- Occasionally, at the height of the spin, Seth teleports out into another attack instead of landing.
- Cymbal Toss: Seth throws his shield horizontally before teleporting to the shield's location and catching it.
- Aerial Cymbal Toss: Seth jumps mid-air and throws his shield diagonally down towards Hornet. The shield bounces upwards upon hitting the ground, after which Seth teleports to its location and catches it before falling to the ground.
- Cymbal Crash: Seth jumps mid-air and then dashes towards the ground with his shield, creating a circular shockwave on impact. The shockwave deals

. - Follow Through: Seth lunges forward with his pin, ending with a second short stab after travelling enough distance or hitting Hornet. Seth always uses this attack after a Cymbal Crash, and sometimes after a Cymbal Toss, but he does not use it on its own. If Hornet is hit, Seth stabs again, dealing
+
. - Bulwark: In between attacks, Seth assumes a defensive stance and positions his cymbal to block any damage from the sides or above. Seth always retaliates with an attack after blocking damage.
- Backstep & Quickstep: If Hornet stands too close to Seth, he may dash backwards a short distance. Otherwise, he makes short dashes around the arena to reposition for attacks.
- Teleport: Instead of leaping or quickstepping to position for attacks, Seth sometimes teleports directly into an attack, often behind Hornet. He always uses teleport attacks to reach Hornet if she is too far away.
When Seth has 889 HP or less remaining, the time between his attacks is reduced.
Phase 2
When he reaches 474 HP, Seth gets staggered; he then shouts to indicate the beginning of Phase 2. In this phase, he gains a new attack and modifies some of his existing ones. The time between his attacks is also greatly reduced.
- Crash Combo: Seth executes the teleporting variant of Cymbal Crash 3 times in a row, ending with a Follow Through. Seth begins Phase 2 with this attack and continues to use it interchangeably with the standard Cymbal Crash.
- Aerial Cymbal Toss: After catching his shield, Seth now occasionally follows this attack into a Cymbal Crash or Crash Combo, instead of falling to the ground normally.
- Pin Whirlwind: Seth can now perform an Aerial Cymbal Toss or Cymbal Crash at the height of the spin; otherwise, he always teleports out into another attack. He also chooses to teleport more frequently compared to Phase 1.
Hornet is not locked into the arena for this fight and can escape at any time. Leaving resets the fight.

Location
Seth is fought in a hidden area outside of Shellwood Shrine in Grand Gate, accessed through a breakable wall in the lift shaft. After Nyleth is defeated and Hornet obtains either another Old Heart or the Everbloom, he becomes a wandering NPC and visits Greymoor, Shellwood, Grand Gate (skippable after meeting him in Shellwood if Ecstasy of the End has already been completed and the Everbloom is obtained), and lastly Fleatopia (once Ecstasy of the End is completed).

Trivia
- Seth was first revealed by his creator Seth Goldman in a Reddit post mentioning his meeting with Team Cherry as well as his struggle with Ewing Sarcoma, a type of cancer.[5]
- Goldman tragically passed away later that year,[6] and he is commemorated at the very end of the credits as an "Extra Special Thanks". His is the final and one of the most prominent names in the credits.
- Seth does not respond to the Needolin during combat, but he does respond to it when passive.
- Seth's voice lines when playing the Needolin have a similar melody to the soundtrack "Nyleth", his battle music.
- Shrine Guardian Seth was originally intended to be named Shellwood Guardian Seth.[7]
- Seth is the last of a series of NPCs teased using riddles provided by Matthew "Leth" Griffin that lasted throughout June to July of 2020, the others being Huntress, Grindle, and the Flea Caravan.
- The following description was provided upon the riddles being solved, alongside the promotional art and two gifs:
- "The Voice… has chosen me."
- An eternal protector, waiting amidst tangled roots at the base of the Citadel. He guards a secret long forgotten and will attack any who stray too close.
- Imbued with stamina and strength beyond a normal bug, he strikes up close or from a distance with blinding speed. With unwavering devotion, this ancient guardian will fight until the very end, and beyond.
- Many of the Citadel’s caste have fallen to this deadly warrior. Those who encounter him should turn back, or else prepare for a vicious battle.
- The character of Seth was developed together with Seth Goldman, who's a really cool young guy we were fortunate enough to meet and get to know. Thanks to the Marty Lyons Foundation for hooking us up with Seth. Huge thanks to Seth himself! And look forward to entering battle with his deadly bug warrior![8]
- The riddles solved to reveal Seth required two passwords: the first one to open the initial file, the second to open the file within. The passwords were protector and bloom. The riddles and solutions are outlined below:
